  3. <hi style=afpcap>The Spitfire was not purchased by the Army, although approximately 600 were supplied from Supermarine in a reverse 'Lend-Lease' arrangement. US volunteers had flown Spitfires for the RAF since 1940 as the 'Eagle' squadrons became known. After the entry of the US into World War Two, the Spitfire entered US service in Europe with several squadrons in England being equipped with the type. The 'Eagle' squadrons were subsequently transferred from the RAF to the USAAF. Spitfires were also flown by US pilots in the Mediterranean and in North Africa.</hi>
